Does anybody know anything about the Dorion family? I am researching them. The family is descended from Pierre Dorion (of the Louis and Clark expedition, and Ft. Pierre, SD was named after him) and his wife, Holy Rainbow. They had a son, also named Pierre Dorion, who married Marie, a full-blood Iowa Indian. Most of the family seemed to live on the Rosebud Reservation, but information about this family seems to be extremely scarce. I am descended from this family and would like to find more information.

Jimmie: I typed in Paierre Dorion in the Google search engine and got a wealth of information on just the first page of results: Here are some web sites: users.internet.com/dfnels/dorion.htm has a fairly complete biography on hi and his family. http://museum..bmi.net/MARIE%20DORION520PEOPLE/pierre_dorion_ii.htm I am sorry you will have to type these into the weba ddress box to get to the web sites. These were the two most informative hits I found on Pierre Dorion Also log onto www.rootsweb.com and select teh World Connect Project link. type Pierre Dorion in the search boxes and you should get some treesof the Pierre Dorion Family that go back quite a ways. Look for thetrees o fPierre Dorion with wifeJeanne Andree Hedouin,( Pierre's grandparents), and Jean Marie Dorion with spousetheree Le Normand(Pierre's paretns). Reference: http://www.familysearch.org(Mormon archives web site) Pierre Dorion had 11 siblings inhis family. He was Christened 17 Jan 1749 aat Quebec,Canada. He died 23 Jul 1810 in Petit Rocher, below St. Louis MO. he married Hooy Rainbow, a Yankton Sioux woman in 1780 at Glasgow Scott,Illinois. if you can find a good librarythere where you are, look for a copy of the following: SD Department of History Collectios,, vol.23, 1945 and the story of Father Boecken and Fr. Madlon and their stories and Indian Genealogies are in more detail, and also the original journal pages from Father Hoecken's journal of the Dakota Territory. S Some of the names included in the baptisms(in his journal) include Picotte, Defond/Defunt, Campbell, Dorion/Dorian, Rencountre, LeCompte, and LeClare. the records are written in Latin. the Historical Society does have an English Translation of this Journal. You can contact Virginia Hanson at: Virginia.Hanson2@state.sd.us and check on the cost for having a copy madeof the English Translation(done in 1946). Hope this helps you. Some of the Indian Genealogies included in the article include Lecompte,Ducharme,Zephier, Recountre, Quilt, Old Lodge.

Thanks. I have seen all of that online stuff, but I will look into getting that book. Some of the early members of the family aren't hard to find, but they seem to just disappear in the late 1800s, early 1900s. Also, records seem to be quite scarce also.

I can understand that. ancestry.com's census records only go up to 1930, until the 1940 census is published. I have had some good luck at this web site: www.geneanet.org with others. You might want to give it a try. I don't know if it is still active but there was another genealogical search engine I used to haunt: www.gensearcher.com

Jimmy: I just logged off of Geneanet and they have 50 pages of other reserchers who have done trees on the Dorion Surname from allover theworld. You need to register and give yourself a password and username. Then do a quick search by surname . plug in dorion and hit search. the other web site, forget it! I just logged off of the new revamped site, and all it is is in order to get access to free genealogy searches you have to go througha frustrating , high pressure spiel from various sponsors who want you to sign up for everything from a car loan to a free laptop. the old web site had a slew of different genealogy search engines.
